BMI To Honor Marvin Sapp Only
After all of the discussions this week surrounding Pastor Kim Burrell as a clip from a sermon she preached at her church in Houston, TX went viral as she preached against homosexuality, the rescinded invitation to appear on the Ellen Show, the cancellation of her radio show, secular and gospel artists weighing in on the conversations via social media, BMI made a decision to ask Pastor Burrell to not attend the Trailblazers of Gospel event next week in Atlanta.
BMI was to honor gospel music superstar Marvin Sapp and Kim Burrell at its 18th annual BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Honors at the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, GA on January 14, 2017. But in a statement released on Friday, they made the decision to only honor Sapp.
BMI statement on Kim Burrell:
BMI’s Trailblazers of Gospel Music is an annual celebration of gospel music and its many talented songwriters. Given the controversy surrounding this year’s co-honoree Kim Burrell, we have asked her to not take part in the ceremony in order to allow the focus to remain on the songwriters and their music. BMI was founded over 76 years ago with an open door policy to welcome songwriters across all genres, and that same spirit of tolerance, diversity and inclusiveness continues today.
The invitation-only event, which is part industry celebration and part awe-inspiring worship service, will be attended by gospel music’s premier songwriters, brightest stars and leading industry executives. In addition to honoring Marvin Sapp, BMI will also announce the Most Performed Gospel Song of the Year during this uplifting evening of music and praise.
This inspirational event will pay tribute to the very best of the gospel music community, with former Trailblazers award recipient Yolanda Adams returning to the stage as host alongside gospel singer-songwriter VaShawn Mitchell.
No comment has been made from Bishop Sapp as he is away from social media until January 22.
After reading the above post I thought about this entire situation of BMI not honoring Kim Burrell for the work she has done over the years as an artist in the gospel music industry and my first thought was Marvin Sapp should boycott. After speaking with my wife, and having some thoughts I was reminded of Chris Rock's decision to host the Oscar's after everyone said he should boycott. Chris Rock used the platform to set a narrative. Ellen decided to not allow Kim Burrell on the show to get her point of view even when it appeared she had never watched the clip. Her comments seemed to be based on what she was told and seemed as if she was pressured into making that decision. So it could be a set up for Marvin Sapp to use this opportunity as a gospel artist who is also a pastor as well like Burrell, to speak to where we are as the church, and the Bible in regards to sin of all kinds, the responsibility to preach what the Word says in order to save the lost, and edify as well as strengthen believers.
